Levels of Care at Texas Medical Center

There are various levels of care in which patients may be treated, depending upon the severity of their condition. Throughout a patient's stay, he or she may receive care in more than one unit as changes in condition occur.

Intensive Care Units (ICUs)

Intensive care units, or ICUs, provide comprehensive and continuous care to our most critical patients.

Intermediate Care Units (IMUs)

When a patient's condition becomes more stable, he or she may be transferred to a different level of care, most commonly to an intermediate care unit, or IMU.

Acute Care Units

As the patient's condition continues to improve and requires less monitoring, he or she may be moved to an acute care unit within the hospital. In these units, assessments by the nursing team may be conducted less frequently (in most cases, every three to four hours); however, the call button may be used at any time to facilitate requests. Your caregiver team can provide additional information and specific guidelines about what to expect in the unit where you or your loved one is receiving care.

Overnight Stays for Primary Support & Visiting

Visiting hours are from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. in all units throughout the campus. We encourage those designated as Primary Support for the patient to be at the bedside at any time, including overnight, at the discretion of the patient or the patient's surrogate decision maker. The Primary Support will be issued identification by the nursing unit, and it should be worn at all times. For more information, please ask your nurse.

Calling Your Nurse

Each room is equipped with a nurse-call system; please call your nurse any time you need assistance. When you press the call button, the unit secretary or your nurse will respond over the intercom or in person. For your safety, our bathrooms are equipped with emergency call systems. You can also use the Care Line by calling (713) 704-CARE (2273).

Interpreter Services

The Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center provides limited English proficiency (LEP) patients with medical interpreter services at no cost, to ensure a successful exchange of information between patients and health care providers.

Interpreter Services is available 24 hours a day to provide or arrange for interpreters to assist patients and staff.

All members of our in-house team of Spanish interpreters are nationally certified, making Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center the only hospital in the country to achieve that distinction. Interpretation for other languages, including American Sign Language for the hearing impaired, is provided through an outside agency contracted by our hospital. In cases when immediate assistance is needed or interpretations are short, a Language Line is made available to patients.

If you require an interpreter, please ask a hospital staff member and one will be provided for you upon your request.

Wi-Fi Access

Wireless access is available throughout the Campus, including in Cullen, Jones and Robertson pavilions, as well as in Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital and the Larry D. Johnson Heart & Vascular Institute.

About Your Bill

As a patient receiving services at the Memorial Hermann-TMC Campus, you are ultimately responsible for the charges associated with your treatment and care. We will send you a summary patient statement following your discharge.

Finding Your Way Around the Campus

The Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center campus is divided into six pavilions – the Larry D. Johnson Heart & Vascular Institute, Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital, Cullen Pavilion, Jones Pavilion, Robertson Pavilion and the Susan and Fayez Sarofim Pavilion. The Memorial Hermann Medical Plaza is located directly across Fannin and is easily accessible via the skybridge from the 2nd floor of the main Campus.

All six pavilions are designated by name and color. Campus maps are available at all entrances and with Volunteer Services. Additional maps and wayfinding signage with corresponding colors are posted throughout public areas on levels 1 and 2.

Expert wayfinding navigators also are available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday to guide patients and guests to their desired locations. These navigators are stationed at key areas and can be dispatched to any part of the hospital by calling (713) 704-4141.
