The Children’s Heart Institute Intensive Care Unit at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital features the most advanced technology and equipment for babies and children in need of specialized care. Part of the 30-bed pediatric intensive care unit, patients receive the highest level of care with immediate access to:

  • Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a life-saving technique that supports the function of the heart and lungs. ECMO allows an infant or child to rest while healing of the organs naturally takes place. As a high-volume program in Texas, the Pediatric ECMO Program supports approximately 30 children each year.
  • 24/7 access to our sophisticated, child-friendly cardiac catheterization lab. Affiliated physicians and clinicians perform over 400 cardiac catheterization procedures every year.
  • Family centered care that involves the participation of parents and caregivers in addition to the medical care team to achieve the best possible outcome for each child
  • Around-the-clock care by a team of specialists trained to care for complex congenital heart disease
  • Smooth transition into adulthood with co-management of adult congenital heart defects with our partners at the Larry D. Johnson Heart & Vascular Institute
  • Access to the seven-bed Ronald McDonald House of Houston for PICU families. This is located on the 9th floor of Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital
  • The Children's Transport Team features a team of nurses, respiratory therapists, and physicians highly experienced in pediatric and neonatal critical care. The specialized team provides emergency pediatric and neonatal transport services for patients from infants to adolescents around the clock, 365 days a year, via air or ground transportation.

Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital is also home to an award-winning 118-bed Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), providing the highest level of care available for premature and critically-ill newborns.

We believe one of the most important team members is you, the parent. Through multidisciplinary rounds, you will be involved in your child’s care and remain active in your child’s recovery, every step of the way.
