Audience

This program is designed for athletic trainers, physical therapists, physicians and other professionals responsible for the treatment and prevention of injuries sustained by competitive and recreational athletes.

Objectives

It is anticipated that after completion of the 23rd Annual Sports Medicine Update, the attendee will be able to:

  • Explain appropriate care strategies for various dental injuries sustained in sports
  • Create a progression screening tool for overhead throwing athletes
  • Explain the limitations and benefits of isometric contraction in the athlete
  • Identify intrinsic factors affecting athletic performance
  • Evaluate and develop a treatment plan for facial injuries sustained in sports
  • Appraise patients of the current strategies being utilized to increase ACL reconstruction success rates
  • Detail strategies the health care professional can utilize during a crisis situation
  • Demonstrate current techniques for backboarding the injured athlete
  • Explain WBGT-science and its benefit to athlete health
  • Interpret benefits of various software programs currently utilized in sports medicine
  • Recognize scientifically-proven nutritional practices versus current trends
  • Give examples of mobility exercises, progressions and regressions appropriate for athletes dealing with shoulder injuries
  • List the signs and symptoms of sudden cardiac arrest
  • Describe the principles of Blood Flow Restriction and its use in the sports setting
  • Interpret diagnostic ultrasound images to evaluate orthopaedic injuries
  • Recommend psychological strategies that will aid in an athlete's RTP following injury
  • Recommend simple nutritional strategies that will aid performance
  • Describe the principles of muscle inhibition following injury
  • Describe modifiable risk factors for hamstring injuries
  • Explain common procedures for transporting the injured athlete
  • Recognize mechanical deficiencies that may result in injury

Continuing Education

Memorial Hermann | Rockets Sports Medicine Institute is recognized by the Board of Certification Inc. to offer continuing education for certified athletic trainers. Application has been made to the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners for approval as a Continuing Competence Activity for PT's and PTAs. This symposium is offering 16.0 hours of continuing education.
